Coalition for the International Criminal Court

What is the CICC?

The Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) is a global network of civil society organisations working to promote a strong, effective, and independent International Criminal Court. The Coalition brings together organisations from all regions to share information, coordinate advocacy, and support accountability for the most serious international crimes.

Since its establishment, the CICC has played a key role in strengthening civil society engagement with the Court and its Assembly of States Parties, ensuring that diverse perspectives inform discussions on law, policy, and institutional practice.

Our role

Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice hosts the Secretariat of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court. In this role, we support the day-to-day coordination of the Coalition and facilitate engagement between civil society members, ICC officials, and state representatives.

Our work includes:

  • Supporting information-sharing and coordination across the Coalition’s global membership
  • Facilitating civil society engagement with the ICC and the Assembly of States Parties
  • Convening meetings, briefings, and exchanges on developments affecting the Court
  • Integrating gender justice and survivor-informed perspectives into Coalition discussions and advocacy, in collaboration with members

While hosting the Secretariat, WIGJ works in close partnership with the Coalition’s Steering Committee and membership, recognising that the CICC is a collective platform shaped by its members.

Why the CICC matters for gender justice

Civil society engagement has been critical to the development, functioning, and legitimacy of the ICC. Through the CICC, organisations working on gender justice, victims’ rights, and accountability are able to coordinate their efforts, share expertise, and engage collectively with international justice processes.

By supporting the Coalition’s work, WIGJ helps ensure that gender-based crimes, survivor participation, and intersectional perspectives remain visible within discussions on the Court’s policies, priorities, and institutional reform, while respecting the Coalition’s broad mandate and diversity of views.

Working in coalition

Our role within the CICC reflects our broader approach to coalition work: supporting collaboration, shared ownership, and responsible use of access and influence. We are attentive to power dynamics within international justice spaces and work to ensure that civil society engagement remains inclusive, transparent, and responsive to members’ priorities.
