Colombia is setting a path for intersectionality, survivor agency and restorative justice | LSE Blogs
June 19, 2025—To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, our colleague Valeria Babără explores how Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) is advancing a more inclusive model of justice in its latest indictment in Case 07.
The decision investigates the FARC-EP’s recruitment and use of children in armed conflict and associated crimes, including sexual and reproductive violence, and integrates intersectional analysis throughout. Rather than treating gender, childhood, and ethnic identity as separate issues, the indictment acknowledges how overlapping forms of discrimination shaped children’s experiences of harm.
Valeria reflects on how the tribunal recognizes survivors not just as witnesses, but as participants whose voices shape legal reasoning. She also points to the decision’s attention to trauma-informed participation, collective harm, and long-term reintegration needs, offering valuable insight for international criminal law actors seeking to build more responsive systems of justice.
