Colombia’s transitional justice tribunal paves new ground on reproductive violence | LSE Blogs
June 19, 2025—To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, our colleague Juliana Laguna-Trujillo explores the groundbreaking first indictment issued by Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) in Case 07 in a blog for the LSE Women, Peace and Security platform.
The decision addresses the recruitment and treatment of at least 18,677 children by the FARC-EP guerrilla group between 1971 and 2016.
Juliana unpacks how the tribunal recognises reproductive violence as a distinct form of harm, addresses abuses within the ranks of the armed group, including against children with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, and sets important legal precedents that extend beyond Colombia.
Her analysis highlights what it means to centre gender as a structuring force in conflict, and why the international criminal law system, specifically the International Criminal Court, should learn from this case.
