ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan on Leave Following Sexual Assault Allegations

In Latest Posts by Admin

ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan has stepped aside and taken leave amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. This is not an extraordinary measure, nor is it a presumption of guilt. It is a standard and essential step to safeguard the credibility of the investigation and protect against further potential harm.

In any professional setting, especially within institutions entrusted with global justice and accountability, such serious allegations would warrant a temporary step aside. This procedural safeguard ensures transparency, fairness, and institutional integrity.

It is crucial to reaffirm: the Office of the Prosecutor is not dependent on any single individual. It comprises a dedicated team of experienced professionals, including two Deputy Prosecutors, fully capable of continuing its critical mandate. Ongoing investigations, including those into international crimes committed by high-profile actors, will proceed undeterred.

At Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice, we advocate for legal systems that are both equitable, transparent, and responsive. Ensuring the credibility of the ICC is essential to maintaining public trust and advancing survivor-informed gender justice.

There must be no double standards when it comes to justice.

“In fact, removing an individual whose alleged behaviour may have fuelled a toxic work culture may strengthen the office’s ability to carry out its mandate with professionalism and public trust,” Alix Vuillemin, Executive Director, Reuters.
