Statement on the UN Security Council Resolution 2467
On 23 April 2019, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted Resolution 2467 (2019) on Women and Peace and Security. Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice welcomes the efforts of Germany during their UNSC Presidency to sponsor the first resolution addressing conflict related sexual violence since 2013.
The UNSC Open Debate around the issue of sexual violence in conflict was another encouraging step in the effort to combat sexual violence in conflict at the international level. Ultimately, however, the failure of Resolution 2467 to include the right to sexual and reproductive health services for survivors of conflict related sexual violence leads to a significant setback in the international commitment to victims.
