Ugandan Women Civil Society Organisations protest use of excessive force
On 9 May 2011, the Ugandan Women Civil Society Organisations organised a demonstration to call upon the Government of Uganda to respect, promote, protect, and fulfil the rights of its citizens as enshrined in the 1995 Constitution. In a statement delivered to Margaret Sekagya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders, they denounce the use of excessive force by the Police and other security agencies to suppress demonstrations, the intimidation of human rights defenders who have spoken out about various issues, and the ensuing escalation of violence. They are also calling upon the Government to take proactive measures to address broader social problems, such as food insecurity, unemployment, health and education issues.
