Watch the UN Webcast of the Press Conference hosted on 7 December 2010 by UNIFEM (UN Women) with the Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice for the launch of the Women’s Initiatives’ Gender Report Card on the International Criminal Court, 2010.
The speakers at the event were Anne Marie Goetz, Chief Adviser on Governance, Peace and Security at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM/UN Women); Brigid Inder, Executive Director of Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice; Amira Khair, Women’s Initiatives Sudan Programme Officer; Maria Solis Garcia, Women’s Initiatives Board Member from Guatemala; and Nanette Braun of UNIFEM/UN Women, who moderated the event.
Ms Goetz praised the contribution of the 2010 Gender Report Card, describing it as an example of ‘excellent civil society activism’.
‘If anyone doubts the importance of the work of the Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice, let’s remember the rapes this summer in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) — conflict-inspired rapes that go on all the time’, Ms Goetz stated.
She added that the work of the Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice was one of the best examples of systematic, serious, even scientific, analysis of the situation.
Brigid Inder, speaking about the 2010 Gender Report Card, explained that the publication reviews and analyses all major developments at the International Criminal Court throughout 2010. She stated that 2010 was a year of ‘firsts’ for the Court. She pointed out the challenges for the Court in prosecuting gender-based crimes and the need for greater outreach to women victims/survivors to allow their participation in the justice process before the ICC.
