On 6 and 7 September 2012, the Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice and UN Women will host the Strengthening Gender Justice through International Prosecutions Symposium. Bringing together key actors, including practitioners from the international courts and tribunals, experts in the fields of gender justice and international law, jurists, States Parties, donors, academics and local advocates from conflict and post-conflict states, the Symposium offers a rare opportunity to consider, from a practitioner’s perspective, the current and future progress, challenges and successes in international prosecutions, particularly in relation to gender-based crimes.

During the two day Symposium to be held in The Hague, panelists will examine obstacles and best practices during the investigation and pre-trial stages of a case, the development of prosecution strategies and courtroom proceedings.  Panels will also consider access for, and the participation of victims/survivors in justice and reparations processes; the role of States Parties in supporting the development of a global system of justice and peace; and the jurisprudential developments particularly for gender-based crimes over the past 15 years from a judicial perspective.

The Symposium will feature a special panel with four chief prosecutors and leaders from the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
